Her path to a medical career began at Millsaps College at age 15, yet those who know her well would say it started as early as age 4, when Manisha Sethi, M.D., set her sights on becoming a baby doctor.
"Everybody asks a child what you are going to be when you grow up," said Sethi. "I always wanted to be a baby doctor."
In the fall of 2006, Dr. Sethi marked the first anniversary of the opening of her medical clinic, Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates of Ridgeland. At 31, she's close to the age when most physicians begin their practices, yet Sethi has already served on the faculty at University Medical Center and as chief resident of pediatrics. She has also completed a four-year dual residency in pediatrics and internal medicine.
Although she didn't plan to leave high school early, Dr. Sethi's desire for more challenge prompted her to begin college classes. She started at Millsaps College at age 15 after completing her ninth-grade education at Pillow Academy in Greenwood, Miss. While at Millsaps, she thrived - there was no turning back.
By the time she was 18 years old - three years after entering college - Sethi held a Millsaps degree, graduating magna cum laude. She then entered medical school with ample preparation.
"Millsaps did a great job preparing me for medical school," said Dr. Sethi. "Medical school is very difficult regardless of where you went to undergraduate school. Fortunately, the foundation that I received at Millsaps and the study skills I developed proved valuable for managing the volume of what you learn in medical school."
Besides achieving success at an early age, Dr. Sethi has achieved it in double measure. Completing college, medical school, and residencies is considered a major accomplishment. But she added another element of challenge - she completed not one, but two medical residencies in tandem. She found the breadth of dual residency - seeing patients from newborns to geriatrics - just to her liking.
"I'm comfortable providing services to patients of all ages and also those with complex medical needs," she said. "Being able to assist so many people is appealing to me. I like the idea of having a broad background."
Dr. Sethi credits Millsaps for giving her a solid background for all that lies ahead. "I am thankful to Millsaps for allowing me to come to college early. I appreciate the education I received. It was excellent," she said.
