Summer Bailey

Class of 2012

Summer BaileyFor sophomore Summer Bailey, choosing Millsaps meant finding her place.

"Everyone here has much to offer," she said. "I feel like people can make this college their own."

Bailey has found her place at Millsaps as a cheerleader and as a member of the biology honorary known as Beta Beta Beta, the Campus Safety Committee and the Campus Ministry Team. "It's really important to get involved, and there are lots of chances to do so," she said.

Bailey's involvement with the Campus Safety Committee that is part of the Student Body Association means working with other students, and that makes it worthwhile. "Any bills we pass have to do with campus safety and making things better for Millsaps," she said.

The Campus Ministry Team, an interfaith organization that works to engage students with each other and the larger world through fun and fellowship, focuses on community building, and that makes it important, Bailey said. She appreciates her job on the committee organizing diversity events because "different cultures are able to do stuff together."

Bailey also works with students who come to Millsaps from other countries. Millsaps currently has students from 18 countries, and Bailey is part of the Millsaps International Buddy System that helps new students find their place. "We get assigned a buddy or two and we help them get adjusted to Millsaps life," she said.

A prospective biology major, Bailey participates in the College's medical mentoring program that provides students the opportunity to shadow medical professionals such as physicians and dentists.

"You shadow a doctor four or five hours a week, along with writing a paper and a journal entry. I am shadowing a family doctor, and I like it a lot," she said.
