Freshman Reading, Fall 2010: Important Information

Jon Meacham's "Voices in Our Blood"

This fall all entering freshman are reading several sections of Voices in Our Blood: America's Best on the Civil Rights Movement, an anthology edited by Jon Meacham. Meacham will deliver an address during Dr. Rob Pearigen's inauguration in October. A Pulitzer Prize winning biographer, Meacham is the former editor of Newsweek and is co-host of "Need to Know" on PBS.

Students have been asked to write and submit an essay on the role individuals can play in meaningful social change. The essays will be used by the Writing Center and Freshmen Seminar faculty as an early diagnostic tool for writing proficiency and can be entered in a Community Voices essay contest. It is hoped that this assignment will set the tone for the coming year, challenging the students to join a community of scholars with a call to reflection and action.

This also introduces the College's newest students to the College's involvement in those crucial events in our nation's history and will be an intellectual springboard for many events during the academic year, culminating in the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders in May 2011.  During the coming year, there will many opportunities for the college community to join the incoming class in a variety of forums and settings where conversation, reflection, and active engagement can take place.
