Millsaps College named Nina Cunningham Redding as the 2004 Alumna of the Year in recognition of her outstanding work on behalf of numerous community service organizations, most notably Habitat for Humanity.
A native of Memphis and the daughter of a Methodist minister who also attended the College, Redding entered Millsaps in 1958. During her time at the College, she served as historian of Sigma Lambda and treasurer of Kappa Delta Epsilon, and was a member of the Panhellenic Social Science Forum, the Homecoming Court, and the Women's Council. She was on the staff of the Purple & White and served as president and vice president of Chi Omega. She graduated cum laude from Millsaps in 1961 with a degree in history. The next year, she married fellow alum Ed Redding, D.D.S. ('61) and began teaching at Sherwood Junior High School in Memphis. She later taught at Chastain Junior High School in Jackson and as a substitute teacher in the Jackson Public Schools.
Mrs. Redding exemplifies the best of Millsaps through her commitment to social justice. The Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity/Metro Jackson, Inc. since 1990, she has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all of Jackson's citizens. Under her leadership, Habitat has housed 264 families, 170 of them in one inner-city community, and has grown to become one of the top 20 Habitat affiliates in the country. Redding is also a dedicated volunteer with various church and civic organizations. She currently serves on the Community Advisory Board of BankCorp South and the Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Jackson. She is an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Cursillo Movement, and the Kairos Prison Ministry.
Mrs. Redding has served as a Sunday School teacher and Board member of Christ United Methodist Church, an officer in the Parent-Teacher Associations at McLeod Elementary and Chastain Junior High School, an officer in the League of Women Voters, and a board member of the Good Samaritan Center. Redding and her husband are the parents of Eddie Redding III, Jeff Redding ('91), and Charles Redding. They have two grandchildren, Mitch and Lynn.
