Dee Chambliss ('86) is a shining example of the ideals of service and community involvement that distinguish the College's most outstanding alumni. She has been deeply committed to education since her graduation from Millsaps with a B.S. in biology. Currently serving as Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Publications for the state of Mississippi, she is also completing a Ph.D. in education from Delta State University.
Dee began her career in education as a teacher with the Academic and Performing Arts Complex (APAC) of Jackson Public Schools (1986-91), followed by St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Ridgeland (1991-97). After earning certification in educational administration, she returned to JPS as an instructional specialist, then Executive Director of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
Dee is involved in numerous volunteer activities for education and leadership. A member of the PTAs at both McWillie Elementary School and Power APAC, she has also been a mentor with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Jackson. She serves on the boards of Jackson Parents for Public Schools, Mississippi Jumpstart Coalition, Delta State Center for Rural Education, and the Mississippi Association for Gifted Children. Dee is a graduate of Leadership Mississippi, Leadership Jackson, and the Stennis Institute of Leadership, and in 2004 was named to Mississippi's Top 40 under 40.
In addition to her career and civic duties, she has been an enthusiastic advocate of and volunteer for Millsaps, both in the community and on campus, for many years. In the summers of 1989-96, she worked with the College's science department to develop and conduct Summer Research Institutes for Mississippi teachers and students. This program gave many academically talented students from underprivileged areas a chance to have "the Millsaps experience," and some attended the College as a result.
Dee also served on the board of the Millsaps Principals' Institute and helped recruit prospective students through the Office of Admissions' Volunteer Alumni Network. Recently, she has been very active with the Millsaps Arts & Lecture Series, serving as Vice President for Membership and as a team captain for programs for three years.
She has been a tireless supporter of the Millsaps Faith & Work Initiative since its inception in 2001, serving as a Lilly Mentor for two students in 2004 and 2006, and as the featured speaker on a "Professing the Professions" panel about careers in education. Dee was also on the search committee for the new Millsaps chaplain and on the 1986 class reunion committee.
She is married to Carneal Chambliss III and they have three children: Anna Kathryn, Aryn Theresa, and Carneal IV.
