The 2010 football season opens for the Millsaps Majors on Saturday, September 4 at 7 p.m. with the "Backyard Brawl," featuring the Mississippi College Choctaws and the Millsaps College Majors on Harper Davis Field.
"The first football game of the season is always an exciting time for our students and since this is my first Backyard Brawl to attend as president, I'm especially excited about the occasion," said Millsaps President Robert W. Pearigen. "Athletics encourages life lessons, and student-athletes are able to approach academic opportunities at our colleges in a way that encourages a commitment to excellence in all endeavors."
The annual rivalry football game is presented for the fourth year by CARA (Community Animal and Rescue and Adoption), a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter in Jackson. The game is sponsored by the Mississippi Sports Council and sponsorships benefit both institutions through the money raised and the pre-sale of tickets.
The first "Backyard Brawl" was played between the two schools in 1920 and was the first football game for the Millsaps Majors. There was a 40-year hiatus from 1960 to 1999 and the rivalry resumed in 2000.
All tickets are general admission $10 per person (anyone 3 years and older is required to have a ticket for admission). Game day tickets will be sold for $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Millsaps Athletic Office (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday) through Friday, September 3.
