Three sororities at Millsaps College have received national recognition for their achievements.
"To have three sorority chapters on a campus the size of Millsaps earn national recognition is exceptional," said Megan James, director of orientation and student activities at Millsaps. "Sororities spend a significant amount of time and energy raising money for philanthropies and many of their members are leaders on campus."
The Chi Omega chapter at Millsaps received a 2010 Chi Omega Fraternity Award of Excellence and a 2010 Scholarship Award.
The Delta Delta Delta chapter at Millsaps received the 2010 Haller Award, which was established in 1994 in honor of Margaret Paddock Haller, a former Tri-Delta national president. The award recognizes chapters with successful recruitment, well-balanced programming, outstanding academic achievement, strong sisterhood, a commitment to the organization's purpose and rituals, financial responsibility, good alumnae relations, strong risk management and good campus and Panhellenic relations.
The Tri-Delta chapter at Millsaps was also named first runner-up for the Intellectual Life Award, received an honorable mention for New Member Integration and was named to the Recruitment and Academic Honor Roll.
The Kappa Delta chapter at Millsaps received the Five Star Award that is given to its top 25 chapters in the nation.
Service-social sororities and fraternities play a vital role in developing young leaders, said Dr. Brit Katz, vice president for student life and dean of students at Millsaps.
"Millsaps College is grateful that our sororities and fraternities assign great obligation to attain award-winning standards while playing this role," he said. "It is not surprising that so many of the organizations earn most-coveted accolades from their national offices."
