Millsaps College approaches the new academic year with significant academic/athletic accolades that include the highest graduation rate for athletes among private colleges in Mississippi.

A highlight of last year was the receipt of the David M. Halbrook Award that is given for the highest student-athlete graduation rate - 92 percent - among private colleges in the state of Mississippi.

Millsaps claimed the award for the third consecutive year. The College has received the award for 19 of the last 25 years.

"The Millsaps College Athletic programs completed another stellar year on the field and in the classroom for 2009-2010," said Tim Wise, athletic director for the College. "Numerous individual honors in conference recognition highlighted the seasons as well as conference, regional and national awards in academic achievement."

Preparing for the 2010-2011 athletic season are Aaron Pelch, head football coach at Millsaps since March. He is a former National Football League assistant coach who from 2006 until 2009 coached at Millsaps College.

The 2010-11 year will bring the start of competition in the sport of lacrosse for women and men on our campus. Laying the foundation are Men's Lacrosse Coach Luke Beam and Women's Lacrosse Coach Tracy Cepnio.

Andy Till, who coaches cross country and track at Millsaps, said his team is in place.

"I'll have 11 cross country recruits - five women and six men - this fall," he said. "The team has been putting in their base miles," he said.

Here are some highlights of the 2009-2010 athletic year.

Football

The Majors became in 2009 the Football SCAC co-conference champions for the fourth consecutive season.

Seven football players were named to D3football.com's Team of the Week during the course of the 2009 season, and the football team had a school-record tying 20 All-SCAC Football selections, including Will Hawkins as SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Michael Galatas as Special Teams Player-of-the-Year for the second consecutive season.

Hawkins became first player in SCAC history out of the four major sports to be named the Player-of-the-Year in both baseball and football. Hawkins was also named D3football.com First Team All-American, a second in the history of the program.

Volleyball

The volleyball season saw Raven Scott named SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year, and Kate Hall honored as Second Team All-SCAC selection.

Soccer

Women's soccer posted the first back-to-back eight win seasons in school history, and the team defeated Mississippi College for the first time in program history on Oct. 20, 2009. Leslie Robichaux was named SCAC women's soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Year and First Team All-SCAC, and Meredith Harris joined her on the First Team All-SCAC team for the second consecutive year. Robichaux is the third player in the history of Millsaps with 31 goals and the fourth player to earn 75 points in three seasons.

Basketball

During basketball season, Blake Martinez was named Second Team All-SCAC.

Softball

The softball season saw Jennifer McKinley became the all-time leader in the history of Millsaps in hits, doubles, RBIs, walks and batting average while setting the single-season record for home runs. McKinley will be nominated for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

The softball team came within one strike of reaching NCAA Tournament but fell to Southwestern University in the SCAC Softball Championship game.

Track and Field

The Inaugural Millsaps track and field team had an impressive showing at the SCAC Championships, with the men placing fifth overall and the women placing sixth out of 10 schools.

Mike Galatas was awarded the Men's 2010 SCAC Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Deonna Walton the first track and field athlete to be honored as SCAC Athlete-of-the-Week in program's inaugural season.

Baseball

Seven baseball players earned First Team All-SCAC honors; that was the largest number of players recognized among SCAC institutions.

Tennis

The Women's tennis team improved by eight wins in 2010. The team had one win in 2009 and nine in 2010.

Additional Awards

Nine players were named ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District. They were Leslie Robichaux, Sarah Nelin, Sam Herman, Oliver Galicki, Blake Martinez, Jennifer McKinley, Laura Litton, Will Hawkins and Aaron Williams.

Inducted into the Millsaps Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2009 were Nathan Guice, MeMe Soho Leonard, Wes Ingram and Michele Biegel.

Improvements

Improvements made to athletic facilities include a tennis viewing deck, a paved  driving area leading to a small parking area and a paved path to the tennis courts.
