Millsaps College to Hold Week-Long September 11 Rememberance

September 11, 2011

To mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Millsaps College is hosting a week-long memorial beginning on Sept. 6.

The plans include a showing for students of the film 9/11 in Memoriam: New York City, a photography exhibit, discussions on diversity and a public remembrance ceremony with music, presentations by faculty and readings by students.

Students, faculty and staff will have an opportunity to write the names of each of the 3,300 victims on pieces of paper that will be linked to form a chain and hung in the Student Center.

"Our goal with this week of remembrance is not to dwell on the negative of what transpired, but rather to reflect and enlighten our students, who were 8 to 12 years old on 9/11, on the sheer magnitude, devastation and sacrifices that were made during and following 9/11," said Dr. Rob Pearigen, president of Millsaps College. "We want to have a conversation that will help all of us move forward toward hopeful reconciliation of our differences while finding commonality within our communities and world."

On the west side of campus, the Christian Center cupola clocks are set to 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. - the exact times of the four events at the North Trade Tower, South Trade Tower, Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa./United93 site on September 11, 2001. The Christian Center was dedicated in 1950 as a memorial honoring former students and graduates who died in service during World War II.

"After the tragedies on 9/11, I was struck by how similar the clock tower on the Christian Center looked to the clocks I had seen in the ruined offices at the Pentagon, fixed to the time of the plane crash," said Dr. David C. Davis, associate dean of arts and letters at Millsaps. "I would hope that when each of us sees the frozen times, that we will remember the victims and their families, and recognize that our own time is limited and that we should celebrate life and family while we can. While it is a memorial to the dead, it should also be a reminder of the gift of life."
