Millsaps Panhellenic Council Receives Make a Difference Award

National Panhellenic CouncilThe Millsaps College Panhellenic Council is one of two recipients of this year's Make a Difference Award, one of the top awards given by the National Panhellenic Conference. The Make a Difference Award is given to college Panhellenic systems for their work that changes perceptions and stereotypes of sorority women.

The Millsaps Panhellenic Council was lauded for its work with Operation Cinderella Story, a dress drive for the Midtown Community Development Center and students from Rowan Middle School in the Midtown neighborhood in Jackson; for partnering with Stop Hunger Now, an international relief agency, to pack food boxes for 6,000 people; for making 372 bookmarks for the literacy program at Brown Elementary School in the Midtown neighborhood in Jackson; and for implementing new educational programs to address alcohol poisoning, eating disorders, hazing and bullying.

Dr. Dean Katz, vice president and dean of students at Millsaps, said the award acknowledges Millsaps sorority women as "scholars and leaders devoted to changing the world, including perceptions of contemporary college women for the better."

Dr. Darby Ray, director of the 1 Campus 1 Community program, said the philanthropic endeavors of the Millsaps Panhellenic Council are characteristic of the College's partnership with the Midtown and K-12 education communities.

"These philanthropies highlight how creative and resourceful our Millsaps students often are in their interaction with off-campus neighbors," Ray said.

The Millsaps Panhellenic Council will receive the Make a Difference Award at the annual meeting of the National Panhellenic Council on Oct. 15 in Austin, Texas. The other recipient of the Make a Difference Award is the Panhellenic Council of the College of William & Mary.

An additional 14 college Panhellenic Councils will also receive awards in the areas of leadership, progress, excellence, community service, philanthropy, public relations, risk management, recruitment and scholarship.

College Panhellenic Councils are governing bodies of sorority life on campus, and consist of representatives from each sorority on campus. The National Panhellenic Council is the umbrella organization of the 26 national and international sororities found on over 600 college campuses.
